If the Duchess of Sussex had been favouring a strictly navy, black and moss-green palette in the run-up to her pregnancy announcement, yesterday as the well wishes began to pour in, she looked positively radiant in cream. A metaphor for the baby she and Prince Harry are expecting in the springs of 2019 perhaps? There were multiple messages to be read from Meghan’s first outfit on her inaugural royal tour.
First, the designer. Wearing a “Blessed” shift dress by Australian designer Karen Gee, Meghan gave her first nod to the diplomatic dressing that has become part and parcel of any overseas royal engagement. The fact that Gee – who founded her business five years ago with no formal training but a desire to empower women – told press, "We're all like proud mothers right now”, brought the symbolism of the royal baby news full circle. Needless to say, the “Meghan effect” was in full swing, as Gee’s online shop crashed within mere moments of people recognising the dress. And her favoured Stuart Weitzman pumps continue to sell well.
Secondly, the jewellery. Having paid tribute to the talent of the country already, Meghan’s outfit accents were all about acknowledging the family she joined when she wed Prince Harry. A pair of butterfly earrings and a gold link bracelet adorned with two blue stones that belonged to Diana, Princess of Wales, seemed to say more about Meghan’s family values than an A$1,800 (£972) “Blessed” dress ever could.
