THE man responsible for America’s deadliest mass shooting, who killed 59 people in an horrific attack in Las Vegas, regularly berated his girlfriend in public. Stephen Paddock apparently took his own life just over an hour after spraying thousands of rounds of bullets from the broken window of his room at the Mandalay Bay Resort, down on concertgoers below. In addition to the hefty death toll, some 527 people were injured. His Australian girlfriend Marilou Danley will return to the United States to speak with police, as they try to piece together his motive for the shocking act. Reports have emerged of Paddock’s verbally abusive behaviour towards the woman, an Australian citizen who previously lived on the Gold Coast but was originally from the Philippines.The Los Angeles Times spoke to those who live and work in Paddock’s neighbourhood in Mesquite, Nevada, who came into contact with the killer. At the local casino, which the keen high-stakes gambler frequented, he was remembered as “a tall man with a big beer belly and heavy bags under his eyes” who was nasty to Ms Danley. “It happened a lot,” Esperanza Mendoza, supervisor of the Starbucks inside the casino, recalled of Paddock berating his girlfriend. Whenever he and Ms Danley would come in for their regular coffee order — he would get a venti mocha cappuccino and she a medium caramel macchiato — she would offer to pay, Ms Mendoza recalled. “He would glare down at her and say — with a mean attitude — ‘You don’t need (a) casino card for this. I’m paying for your drink, just like I’m paying for you.’ When the barista saw Paddock’s photo splashed across the news, she was shocked. “That’s because of what he’d done and because we have been face-to-face with this man so many times.”In the immediate aftermath of the horror on Sunday night local time, police named Ms Danley as a person of interest in their investigation as Paddock had her identification in the hotel room. While she was later cleared of any involvement, they still want to interview her about Paddock. She was reportedly in The Philippines at the time, although there have been conflicting accounts of Ms Danley being in Japan. Police said today she is en route to Nevada. She and Paddock shared a home together in the Las Vegas suburbs but little is known about the 62-year-old woman.I’ve met her three or four times,” Paddock’s brother, Eric, told American media on Tuesday. “She’s got a Facebook page; she sends my mum cookies.” Danley’s LinkedIn profile listed her as working as a “high limit hostess” at Atlantis Casino in Reno between 2010 and 2013. She previously was married to Arkansas resident Geary Danley, until the pair divorced in 2015. A person listed as her witness in the divorce records insisted Danley isn’t connected with Paddock’s behaviour. “She had nothing to do with this psycho,” the man, who was not identified, told the Reno Gazette-Journal. “The poor lady, she is in The Philippines visiting family.” “Then she would softly say, ‘OK’ and step back behind him. He was so rude to her in front of us.”
